The Community-Based Educational and Literacy Development Training Workshops for Better Parenting and Well-Being were successfully conducted on August 9, 2025, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Brgy. Silakat, Nonok, Lezo, Aklan. The ASU Kalibo literacy team was warmly welcomed by Mrs. Geraldine O. Tan, Barangay Councilor, on behalf of their Barangay Captain, Hon. Arsenio T. Ureta, who expressed gratitude for the knowledge and activities extended to the community by Aklan State University โ Kalibo.
Dr. Aphrile L. De Angel, Director of Curriculum and Instruction and Project Leader, formally opened the program by delivering the rationale of the training workshop, emphasizing its importance in strengthening family literacy, improving parenting skills, and fostering community well-being.
This extension initiative was further supported by a dedicated team of educators. The training was graced by Dr. Amzi V. Martirez, Dean of the College of Industrial Education; Prof. Mary Ann P. Martirez, Chair of Extension and Community Service โ Kalibo Campus; Dr. Leunamatileme G. Tosoc, morning session resource speaker; Dr. Sergio F. Tolentino III, Dean of the College of Teacher Education and session moderator; Dr. Ma. Fe P. Popes, who, along with Mr. Lester R. Redaniel, administered the pre-test and post-test; and Dr. Cherry Mae R. Teodosio, afternoon session resource speaker.
In the morning session, Dr. Tosoc discussed the theme โBuilding Strong Family Foundations Through Literacyโ, tackling three core topics: Understanding Your Role as a Parent in Your Childโs Education, Basic Reading and Writing Skills for Parents, and Practical Parenting Skills for Different Age Groups. The session featured two engaging workshops: Family Reading Circle โ short story reading using proper pacing, emotion, and tone, and Parenting Challenge Solutions โ a scenario-based performance by participating parents, allowing them to role-play and reflect on practical parenting situations.
The afternoon session featured Dr. Cherry R. Teodosio with the theme โFamily Well-Being and Community Connectionโ. Her presentation addressed Stress Management for Parents and Families, Responsible Parenting in Challenging Times, and Building Community Support Networks with Barangay Leadership. Her workshops centered on identifying Family Values and creating a Family Needs Wishlist, enabling participants to recognize their householdsโ priorities and the communityโs shared needs.
The event concluded with the awarding of certificates to resource persons and participants, led by Dr. De Angel and Prof. Martirez, followed by closing remarks from Prof. Martirez, emphasizing the importance of sustained community engagement for literacy and family well-being.
The activity underscored the vital role of education in strengthening family ties, enhancing parenting skills, and fostering community resilience, leaving participants empowered to become more proactive partners in their childrenโs education and community development.
