Banga, Aklan — The Department of Science and Technology Region VI (DOST VI) and Aklan State University (ASU) Kalibo signed two Memoranda of Agreement (MOAs) aimed at advancing science and technology initiatives in the province.
Under the first MOA, DOST VI identified the Grants-in-Aid (GIA) Program as part of the National Science and Technology Plan (National S&T Plan). DOST VI proposed to implement the project titled “Establishment of the Technology, Innovation, and Collaboration Nest for Aklan (TechNest Aklan)”. To support this initiative, DOST VI has allocated a grant amounting to PHP 1,217,000 to ASU Kalibo. The College of Computer Studies at ASU Kalibo will serve as the implementing agency for the project, which aims to foster innovation, entrepreneurship, and collaboration among local stakeholders.
The second MOA centers on the Community Empowerment Thru Science and Technology (CEST) Program, a strategic initiative under the National S&T Program. The project, entitled “Empowering Akeanon-Bukidnon Communities Through Science and Technology (EAST) Initiatives,” seeks to uplift indigenous communities through various science and technology-driven interventions. DOST VI has committed PHP 2,091,115 in funding to facilitate the program’s implementation, targeting sustainable community development and capacity-building initiatives.
Present during the MOA signing were Dr. Jeffrey A. Clarin, ASU President, who represented ASU in the MOA signing, Dr. Chrystler T. Orbien, Dean of the College of Computer Studies, and Mr. Jonard Nabartey, CIT Faculty. Representatives from DOST-Aklan included Ms. Dyna Rose Tibubos, Provincial Director, Ms. Antonette U. Donato, Assistant Provincial Director, Ms. Meikka D. Villanueva, Project Technical Assistant I, and Ms. Hanna Melger, Staff.
The signing ceremony underscores the commitment of both DOST VI and ASU Kalibo to harness science and technology as key drivers of regional development. Through these projects, the partnership aims to empower local communities, promote technological innovation, and support sustainable economic growth in Aklan.
ASU Kalibo expressed its gratitude to DOST VI for its continued support and pledged to ensure the successful execution of both initiatives. These projects are expected to make significant contributions to the socio-economic advancement of Aklan, paving the way for a more innovative and empowered community.
