LGU-Kalibo and Aklan State University Partner to Preserve Piña Weaving Tradition

Kalibo, Aklan – The Local Government Unit (LGU) of Kalibo and Aklan State University (ASU) have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to launch the “Threads of Tradition: Reinforcing Skills Development” initiative, aimed at preserving and modernizing Aklan’s piña handloom weaving industry. This 10-year partnership, signed by Mayor Juris B. Sucro and ASU President Dr. Jeffrey A. Clarin, seeks to sustain this centuries-old craft by providing students with hands-on training, industry exposure, and essential resources.

As part of the agreement, LGU-Kalibo will donate 10 sewing machines to ASU’s College of Industrial Technology, conduct free training sessions twice a year, and invite local master weavers to mentor students. The LGU will also facilitate apprenticeships, provide raw materials, organize exhibitions and fashion shows, and support research and innovation in piña fabric production.

ASU, on the other hand, will be responsible for managing and maintaining the donated sewing machines, providing training venues and personnel, and coordinating with LGU-Kalibo for workshops and reports. This collaboration ensures that students receive both traditional craftsmanship knowledge and modern technological integration in textile production.

Through this partnership, LGU-Kalibo and ASU are ensuring that the piña weaving tradition remains a thriving cultural legacy for future generations.
