In a notable step towards preserving the rich cultural heritage of Aklan, the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Balete and Aklan State University (ASU) formally signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to collaborate on research focused on the Sotis Balete dance and song literature. The MOA signing ceremony took place on February 7, 2025, at 5:00 PM at the Balete Town Hall.
This partnership highlights the commitment of both institutions to safeguarding and promoting intangible cultural heritage through academic research and community engagement. The study will delve into the historical and artistic importance of Sotis Balete, a traditional dance and song that embodies the identity and legacy of the local people.
Aklan State University, led by University President, Dr. Jeffrey A. Clarin, and the LGU of Balete, represented by Municipal Mayor Dexter M. Calizo, formalized this partnership during the ceremony. The event is spearheaded by Vice Mayor Patrick F. Lachica, who also serves as the Chair of the Committee on Tourism, Arts, Culture, and Heritage, alongside Mayor Dexter M. Calizo.
Through this collaboration, ASU will contribute its academic expertise and research capabilities, while LGU Balete will provide cultural insights and community involvement.
The MOA signing marks not only the beginning of a meaningful research endeavor but also a renewed commitment to celebrating and preserving Aklanβs vibrant cultural traditions.
