Japanese Reps Visit ASU

January 14, 2025 — Representatives from JR Shikoku, a Japanese railway company, along with the Japanese Ambassador, Mr. Miki Masafumi, visited the Aklan State University (ASU) Office of the President to discuss potential collaboration opportunities focused on student internships in Japan for ASU engineering students.

ASU President Dr. Jeffrey A. Clarin welcomed the Japanese delegation, which included representatives from the Arwan Cristan Japanese Language Training Center, led by Mr. Joel Salaver, who served as a translator, as well as Ms. Cristine Gallito and Ms. Ruby Santamaria. The Japanese delegation from JR Shikoku included Mr. Ezaki Seichi, Mr. Tanaka Hidetaka, and Mr. Ukimori Naoki.

The proposed internship program aims to provide ASU engineering students with hands-on experience in engineering, infrastructure, and technology, offering a unique opportunity to work in one of the world’s most advanced transportation industries. JR Shikoku will handle all necessary documentation for the interns and provide free Nihongo language training, along with food, transportation, accommodation, and a monthly allowance during their stay in Japan. This comprehensive support is designed to ease the transition for students and enhance their internship experience.

A selection process will be conducted, and only four students will be chosen for the internship—two for maintenance roles and two for engineering positions. Upon completing their internships, students will be encouraged to join JR Shikoku as full-time employees after graduation.

Both sides expressed optimism about the collaboration, with further discussions planned to explore how ASU can accommodate this opportunity. Dr. Clarin shared details about the program’s curriculum and the internship, which may conflict with the company’s expected timeline—a factor that will require additional coordination for smooth implementation of the program.

If successful, this initiative could pave the way for future partnerships, benefiting more students in the coming years.
