The College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Environmental Sciences (CAFES) faculty conducted a seminar on Biosolids Management and Composting Technology at Boracay Water Company Incorporated, Boracay Island, Malay, Aklan, Friday, July 21, 2023.
The team was headed by its Dean, Dr. Eva R. Orlina who presented the highlights of her research in biosolids. She talked about the properties of biosolids from the wastewater treatment plant in Boracay Island under different stabilization processes and heavy metal levels and target hazard quotients of Ipomoea aquatica grown in soils applied with stabilized biosolids.
According to Dr. Orlina, the biosolids in Boracay Island can be classified as “clean biosolids.” Further processing and stabilization can make the material an excellent source of nutrients that can be utilized in old and unproductive soils in the Province of Aklan.
Meanwhile, Ms. Jale Ann Pearl D. Yecla, CTE Faculty, identified the needed research collaborations, and Prof. Ma. Rema B. Lauron, Director, Production, discussed vermicomposting technology.
Dr. Carmenchita M. Tumaca, Chair, CAFES ECS, also identified the needed extension collaborations with the participants.
After the discussion, Engr. Jacquelyn Maquirang, Engr. Joan Intas, and other BIWC Department Heads toured the CAFES faculty showing the facility’s state-of-the-art biosolids processing technology.
This partnership with ASU-CAFES and BWCI is a significant step in maximizing every opportunity to increase the use of alternative fertilizers, reduce waste in landfills or bodies of water, and ensure environmental protection and innovation.
