ASU-Banga Conducts Heart and Oral Health Month Celebration
Aklan State University-Banga conducted a heart and oral health month celebration themed “Ngiti at Tibok ng Puso mo Okay ba Ngayong Pebrero?” at ASU Review Center, February 16, 2017.
The event specifically promotes awareness on hypertension, heart disease, and oral health. The invited resource speaker Dr. Vim I. Samonte, a licensed cardiologist, discussed about proper and basic routines, diet, and check-ups to commit a healthy heart and he quoted, “Yung heart nagre-rest din yan…” the same way Dr. Kay I. Dela Cruz, a licensed Medical Dentist, spoke about the basic sanitation to oral health.
The event also provided freebies to all attendees like, free relaxation massage, BP check-up, and Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS) taking throughout the program.
The success of this event is through the teaming-up of the Medical and Dental Clinic and the GAD Focal Person.

The State Universities and Colleges-Association of Colleges of Agriculture in the Philippines, Inc. (SUC-ACAP, Inc.), a nationwide organization of agricultural state colleges and universities in the country holds its National Organizational Planning Conference at the Aklan State University (ASU) on February 2 - 3, 2017.
The two-day conference was spent for business meeting, talks from invited resource persons and roadmapping planning workshop of the organization which were conducted on the first day of the conference. The second day was allotted for a day tour to selected Agri-spots, Boracay Island and the Rivercruise in New Washington, Aklan.
The participants of the conference are SUC Presidents, Vice Presidents, Deans and Assistant Deans, professors of agriculture and other designated officials of the member-institutions all over the country. The total number of participants were 46. The conference was held to strengthen and revitalize the association for a more proactive organization that could address some issues and challenges besetting the agriculture sector today.
After the short program which was hosted by Dr. Arvin Kim A. Arnilla, a business meeting followed immediately with Dr. Danilo E. Abayon, ASU President and SUC-ACAP, Inc. President, presiding. The first part of the meeting centered on the President’s and Secretary-Treasurer’s report. The President made a brief flashback of ACAP-SUC’s history while the Secretary-Treasurer updated the participants of the associations’ membership status up to the present, as well as the collectible annual membership dues from the member-institutions.
In the second half of the meeting, the following businesses were tackled: Annual ACAP Convention; Work and Financial Plan for the year 2017-2018; Continuing Professional Development; Ratification of the Constitution and By-Laws; and the other matters include incentives of officers; issues and concerns on the Licensure Examination for Agriculturists (LEA), collaborative research and harmonized curriculum content of the agriculture program.
The afternoon session started with a talk delivered by Ms. Cynthia Remedios V. De Guia from the Department of Agriculture–Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR). She talked on the R&D Agenda and Directions of DA-BAR including the various programs being implemented by the agency. Ms. De Guia stressed climate change and ASEAN integration in her talk filled – Trends and Challenges Facing Educational Institutions in the Midst of Climate Change and ASEAN integration. She expounded the topics on climate change and ASEAN Integration and how the SUC-ACAP can make these recent developments as an opportunity to conduct R & D studies to help those that are vulnerable to the effects of various environmental stresses threating both the agriculture and fisheries sector’s productivity.
In the open forum moderated by Dr. Anna Mae C. Relingo, the different SUC-ACAP participants raised their queries on the various research programs of the DA-BAR ranging from on-line submission of proposals on climate change studies to identification of commissioned research. The resource persons enthusiastically responded to the queries raised by the participants with encouragement that DA-BAR supports various research initiatives that caters to the agency’s research priorities and agenda.
Before the end of the first day of the conference, Dr. Paterno I. Rebuelta, the current Executive Director of SUC-ACAP presented to the body the draft Roadmap and Milestones of the association covering the period from 2017 - 2022 in a workshop. After which, the participants were grouped to work on the various areas of concern such as: 1) Curriculum Development Support; 2) Student Development; 3) Library and Information Services; 4) Continuing Professional Development; 5) RD & E; and 6) Production/Income Generating Project.
Culminating the day’s session was the presentation of group outs for the body’s comments and suggestions. The participants eagerly contributed their ideas/suggestions for consideration by the proponents for the betterment of the group’s output.
On the second day of the conference, the participants had a day tour in Boracay Island and the Rivercruise in New Washington. The Boracay group had a side trip in ASU-Ibajay campus and the Bugtongbato Mangrove Project. On the other hand, the Rivercruise group made a stop-over at the Sampaguita Gardens to culminate the two-day conference. Participants from both tour group enjoyed the day’s activity as a way of refreshing one’s senses in commune with nature before they finally take-off for home.

Ibajay, Aklan – Dr. Emily M. Arangote, Campus Director of the Ibajay campus of Aklan State University, better known as the College of Hospitality and Rural Resource Management or CHARRM, and University Director for Standards, successfully completed the pilot run of the Executive Development Program by the Philippine Higher Education Career System (Phil-HECS) held from August 2016 to February 2017.
The program was designed by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), the governing body for all higher education institutions in the country, to engage senior executives of State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) and enhance their competencies to prepare them for increased roles in the improvement of the public higher education sector in the country.
The EDP contained a total of nine (9) modules in a span of a seven (7) – month period, for a total of 102 training days, including breaks, immersion, and colloquium, and a grand total of 162 days, including recruitment and final eligibility assessment.
Dr. Arangote was recommended by the ASU President, Dr. Danilo E. Abayon and VP for Administration, Dr. Anna Mae C. Relingo, and successfully applied to the program at the start of the Academic Year 2016 – 2017, and received her acceptance letter from the Development Academy of the Philippines, the program’s implementing agency, on July 18, 2016, instructing her to attend a battery of managerial assessment tests on July 21, 2016 at Profiles Asia Pacific, Ortigas Center, Pasig City. After passing said stringent admittance and selection process, Dr. Arangote received a memorandum from the CHED chairperson, Dr. Patricia B. Licuanan, signifying her acceptance to the first batch of executive trainees, along with Dr. Relingo and thirty-eight (38) other SUC executives from all over the country. However, due to the exigency of her post as Vice-President for Administration, Dr. Relingo deferred her spot for the program.
The training started on August 23, 2016 with modules on higher education perspectives and how to prepare HEI Innovation and Transformation (HIT) Plans. Dr. Arangote chose to focus on making ASU an Industry-Based Workplace because of the graduates’ low employability and job mismatch between the graduates and the industry. She wanted to focus on “backyard tourism” to promote community-based tourism in Ibajay, at the same time providing an additional venue

for ASU student-trainees to conduct their training while answering the needs of the community. She also envisioned a fully-committed partnership with stakeholders, which would greatly enhance instruction of the flagship courses in ASU-Ibajay as the curriculum will be fully-aligned with the needs of the industry and responsive to the needs of the community as well.
The final leg started on November 14, 2016 with the HIT Plan writing and defense training, followed by the University Dynamics Lab, then the final writing of the HIT Plan. Dr. Arangote was assigned to do the shadowing activity of the executives at the Pangasinan State University for one week, and the immersion activity at Estanza, Lingayen, Pangasinan for another week. TO her it was a challenging and informative learning activity, and she learned a lot from the work of the various executives she had observed. The candidates were then given 34 days to finalize their HIT Plans, and prepare for the defense in the Colloquium. Submission for the HIT Plan materials was set on December 31, and the Colloquium was held on January 17 – 19, 2017.
The Colloquium served as the culminating activity of the ED Program, and provided an opportunity for the candidates to showcase the progress they have made towards becoming more insightful and responsive SUC leaders through their presentation and defense of their HIT Plans to a panel of key stakeholders, which was composed of representatives from CHED, the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC), faculty experts, the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP), and institutional head or representative of each candidate’s respective SUC.
Dr. Arangote successfully presented her HIT Plan to the panel of experts and capably answered their questions about the feasibility and significance of the Plan to the development of Aklan State University as one of the leading HEIs in Western Visayas. January 20, 2017 saw Dr. Arangote heading back to her beloved ASU and hometown Ibajay, just in time for the festivities of the 2017 Ibajay Ati-atihan Festival. The Aklan State University management congratulates her achievement and is proud of what she has accomplished towards positive change in the university’s quest for excellence in higher education.
