Martesano The Aklan State University with the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA RO VI) and Dr. Ruperto Sangalang, Team Leader ASU External Program Management and Review (EPMR) conducted a three-day Strategic Planning Workshop last May 8-10, 2012 at the ASU Review Center, Banga, Aklan. A presentation of the ten-point agenda: GEAR HIGHER by Dr. Danilo E. Abayon President, Aklan State University served as a kick off to the workshop. The university agenda focus on the implementation of strategic actions that span until the University's Centennial in 2018. President Abayon cited, "he Strategic Planning Workshop as a timely activity for the University as the EPMR assessment results are present at hand in which we could anchor our agenda for the plan of action" The presentation of University direction was then followed by the discussion of EPMR results and recommendations by Dr. Sangalang. He emphasized that ASU should act as a system, that is to build up on every unit's strength and further accentuate that the institution should focus on reinforcing the mandated flagship courses while building up on commercial courses as a springboard to the university economic self sufficiency. The NEDA regional director for Region VI, Dir. Ro-Ann Bacal underlined the significant role of ASU in Western Visayas. She also cited some recommendations on how ASU can strengthen its mandate and enhance its capacity to contribute to Provincial development. The Provincial Planning Coordinator for Aklan, Engr. Roger M. Esto also prepared a presentation on development directions of Aklan. He further instituted that Aklan is an agro-tourism led economy, which ASU as an agricultural mandated university could help spur economic development for the Province. Furthermore, he is positive to the possibility of future partnerships of the provincial government with ASU. The succeeding sessions was followed by a series of workshops on SWOT Analysis, the revising/retooling of university mission, vision and goals, the identification of challenges and the formulation of objectives, targets, and strategies where participants were divided into five functional areas, Instruction, Research, Extension, Production and Administration. The enthusiastic participants were able to come up with quality outputs which were further deliberated during the presentation. The consolidated outputs were exhaustively scrutinized by the participants with the help of the facilitators from NEDA and Dr. Sangalang. At the end of the presentation, the latter reminded everyone to always think of indicators that quantify if the University was able to reach its targets. At the culmination of the workshop, Dr. Sangalang presented a proposed organizational structure for ASU. He left a challenge to every participant to always put the best foot forward as the community, the Province of Aklan is expecting the best from it being a state university.
